Prepared by Linda Siekert
Rally
To combat monotony, obedience exhibitors would break their training down into a variety of "doodling"; various heel patterns, random fasts, slows or unexpected halts, periodic calls to front, left or right finishes, pivots, downs, etc. These doodles became the basis for Rally Obedience and are individually depicted on signs that measure anywhere between 8.5 x 11 or 11 x 17 inches.

There are letters in the upper right hand corner of these signs; these letters, N, A, X stand for Novice, Advanced, Excellent. If the sign has all three letters, that sign could be found in all three levels. If the sign has an A, X that sign will only be found in the Advanced or Excellent levels and if it only sports an X that sign will only be found in the Excellent class. An asterisk after the letters means the sign can be used more than once.
Stationary exercises are those which have a HALT either at the beginning, the end, or both.
AKC Rally has a total of 51 stations, 31 of which can be found in Novice, Advance or Excellent classes, 14 of which can be found in the Advanced or Excellent classes, and 6 of which can only be found in the Excellent class.
Once the Rally course is set, exhibitors have a period of time to walk through the course, without dogs, to acclimate themselves to the flow of the course and to practice how they plan to execute each sign.
