203 Lure Coursing
Prepared by Susan Kamen Marsicano
How are the dogs scored?
The hounds will run the course twice, a preliminary run and a final run. Scores from both runs are added for a combined total score. Hounds are awarded placements and points based on where they finished and the number of hounds they competed against. The hounds are running not only for fun and to keep their natural abilities alive, but also for titles.
Scoring by judges at AKC events
SCORING: Hounds shall be judged from the time they enter the field until the time they are removed from the field under the control of a handler. Judges are responsible for scoring all categories in all courses in the preliminaries, finals, runoff, etc.
Scoring and placing of winners shall be decided on the basis of Agility and Endurance. Judges shall score in whole numbers only and shall be governed by the following system:
Overall Ability...................... 10 Points
Follow ................................ 10 Points
Speed ................................ 10 Points
Agility ................................ 10 Points
Endurance .......................... 10 Points
TOTAL ............................... 50 Points
A qualifying score is 50% or more of the total points from each judge. A dog must complete the course to receive a qualifying score unless, in the judges’ opinion, there are extenuating circumstances. A dog whose performance would not be considered by the judge as sufficient to pass a Junior Courser test must not receive a qualifying score. THE DOGS RUN TWICE, AND ARE SCORED TWICE, AND THEN THOSE SCORES ARE ADDED TO EACH OTHER.
Scoring by Judges at ASFA events:
Hounds are normally run in trios, in yellow, pink, and blue colors. Judges assess performance based on each hound's abilities, identifying hounds by their blanket color. The hounds run a preliminary course and a final course, and then may run for Best of Breed. Finally, the Best of Breed run for Best in Field, as an optional stake. The hounds are scored by the following criteria:
Points
15 Follow
15 Enthusiasm
25 Agility
20 Endurance
THE DOGS RUN TWICE, AND ARE SCORED TWICE, AND THEN THOSE SCORES ARE ADDED TO EACH OTHER. 100 POINTS ARE NEEDED TO QUALIFY.
